Who should study BCA degree?

In today's world, we cannot imagine running an institution without the use of IT. IT has become an indispensable part of our daily lives which is being used in all the sectors. Along with the rise in the use of IT, the preference of studying computer related course is also rising. These days high school graduates from any background can opt to learn IT related degrees. One of the computer related degree is Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA). BCA is a four years course which consists of total 8 semesters. BCA is run by most of the universities in Nepal and their course content is almost similar.

BCA is focused towards the application area of computer. Its a computer science degree. Students studying BCA have a lots of choice to select from any one of the application area of IT which is mentioned below:

I haven't studied Mathematics in my +2, Can I study BCA?

It is important for a student to have a basic foundation of mathematics since BCA being a computer science degree is mainly focused towards the application development. However, students have choice to select a career path from other areas of IT as well. If you have a good foundation of mathematics from class 10 but you haven't taken any mathematics subject in your class 11 or 12 then still you can study BCA. The eligibility criteria can slightly differ as per the university. We have seen students from management background showing good performance in application development or other areas of IT. Therefore, mathematics is not a requirement for studying BCA.

If you have a strong in any one of the areas of IT then BCA is a right course for you. It is not very hard in comparison to other IT degrees like Computer Engineering or Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology. Even an average student with a good focus on his/ her studies can do well in BCA.

How to prepare oneself for the BCA course?

If you are really interested in studying BCA and have just completed your final exam of +2 then we suggest you to join a programming related course during your 3 months of break. This will help you to develop a strong foundation in the area of programming which will help you throughout your study period of BCA. There are lots of courses to start from like C/ C++ programming, Python programming or JavaScript to get a strong foundation in the area of programming. 

Some of the students who wants to study BCA are already determined to make a career in the area of networking or multimedia or other areas. In that case student can take respective training courses during their break.

Part-time Job Opportunities

Along with the rise in the use of IT products and services, the demand of skilled IT manpower has also increased a lot in these recent years. Therefore, students studying BCA who can develop themselves in any one of the professional area like application development, graphics design, web design, hardware and network, software testing, digital marketing in the early years can easily opt for a part time job. BCA being not so hard to study, students can manage to work at least 4 to 5 hours on a daily basis. This will ultimately help students to apply the knowledge acquired in BCA at their job. It will also help students to become independent in the early stage of their life. Students will become more responsible and they will have years of experience in the professional area before they complete their studies.

Cost of studying BCA is cheaper comparted to other Computer Science degrees

If we compare the cost of BCA with other IT or Computer Science degrees then the cost of studying BCA is relatively cheaper. BCA being a 4 years computer science degree in Nepal can be studied within a fair amount of cost. The cost of studying BCA in government colleges is normally NRs. 340000. The cost can vary in private colleges based on the facility the college is providing. Therefore, student who is willing to make a career in the field of IT but looking for a cost effective bachelors degree then BCA can be a good choice. Moreover, if the student can do a part-time job then he/ she can finish the course without anybody support. We have come across many students who are self sustained. For that student have to make a plan early and prepare accordingly.
